Our Mission
The SGC at Utah Tech University exists to facilitate learning, exploration, and protection of the unique geology and environments of the Southwestern United States.
Come learn about the geology and gold extraction at the Libertygold Goldstrike Mine in the Bull Valley Mountains, NW of St. George. We will visit several locations around the mine site to look at the geology and learn about gold mineralization. Meet at 8:30am at the SET Building parking lot, Utah Tech campus, or 9:00am at the Santa Clara Harmon’s parking lot (3520 Pioneer Pkwy, Santa Clara, UT 84765). The visit should be over by 5pm. This event is cosponsored by the Southwest Geoscience Center and the Southwest Utah Geological Association.
The SGC at Utah Tech University exists to facilitate learning, exploration, and protection of the unique geology and environments of the Southwestern United States.
Inasmuch as the SGC is integrated into UT, its primary focus is to educate. Educational opportunities provided by the SGC start with the students at the university, but should extend to community members and eventually to national and international partners.
The SGC is situated in a unique area that can allow people with diverse interests and specialties to connect with one another. Through the opportunities and resources offered by the SGC, it will facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration.
The world-class geology and environments of the Southwest are treasures that should be shared with and appreciated by all who want to experience them. The SGC will strive to implement, and share information about, practices that will help minimize human impact and ensure the availability of these features to future generations.
The SGC provides support to scholars and students to research the diverse, easy-to-access, natural phenomena found in this region, and identify analogues for similar areas elsewhere.
Promoting the region as a unique and ideal location for geoscience work is an imperative component of the SGC. The SGC will work to develop programs projects that encourage and support those that come to explore this area. It will also focus on student recruitment into the Earth and Environmental Sciences department from university communities that do not already offer degrees in the geosciences.
